The 5-second
homepage test.

A stranger lands on your homepage and gives it about five seconds before deciding to stay or go. In those five seconds they're not reading — they're scanning for three answers. If they can't find them, they leave, and you never knew they were there.

Most homepages don't fail because they're ugly. They fail because they're unclear. The design is fine; the message is fog. And fog is expensive — it's the difference between a visitor who books and one who bounces before your traffic ever shows up as a result.

The three questions

Open your homepage, count to five, and ask whether a first-time visitor could answer these:

  • Who is this for? Can they tell, immediately, that it's for someone like them?
  • What do they actually get? Not your job title — the outcome you create.
  • What do I do next? Is there one obvious action, or a wall of equal-weight options?

If any answer takes longer than five seconds, that's your leak. And it's almost always question one or three.

Clear beats clever, every single time. A visitor who understands you in five seconds will give you five minutes. A visitor who has to work for it gives you nothing.

Why this happens

Two reasons, usually. First, the curse of knowledge: you're so close to your business that what's obvious to you reads as vague to everyone else. Second, fear of leaving someone out — so you try to speak to everyone, and end up landing with no one. Both push you toward language that's technically accurate and practically useless.

The fix, in three lines

You don't need a redesign. You need three lines, in this order, above the fold:

  • Line one — who you're for. Name the person. "For GTA founders who…" beats "We're a full-service agency."
  • Line two — what they get, in plain words. The result, not the process. A 12-year-old should understand it.
  • Line three — one clear next step. A single button. "Book a strategy session." Not five competing links.

That's it. Three lines and one button will out-convert a beautiful page that makes people think.

Run the test today

Show your homepage to someone outside your industry for five seconds, then hide it and ask them the three questions. Their stumble is your edit. Fix the line they couldn't answer, and you've just recovered the visitors you were quietly losing.

Clarity isn't the polish you add at the end. It's the strategy you start with — and it's the cheapest growth lever most businesses never pull.
